A serendipitous conversation in a pharmacy line in Grosse Pointe has changed the life of a Detroit woman, making her a millionaire. Sharonda Blunt, 44, decided to buy a Powerball ticket for the first time and ended up winning a staggering $1 million. As reported by CBS News Detroit, Blunt matched five white balls in the September 1 drawing—numbers 08-23-25-40-53—to secure her prize.
Talking to another customer who was purchasing a Powerball ticket inspired her to try her hand at the game. After being prompted by a family member just a few days later, who mentioned that the CVS in Grosse Pointe was where a $1 million winning ticket was sold, Blunt checked her numbers. "When she read five of my numbers, I grabbed her phone to see for myself and then started screaming and hollering when I saw I won $1 million! Winning a prize like this is truly a blessing,” Blunt said, per WZZM13.
The newfound luck of Blunt is not lost on Michigan Lottery officials. Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli highlighted Blunt's good fortune, stating, "Beginners luck proved true for Sharonda Blunt who purchased her first Powerball ticket ever after hearing about the game while in line at the store and then won a $1 million prize!" The win came amidst an exciting run for the Powerball jackpot, which had reached $1.78 billion, as per MI Lottery Connect.
Bought for just $2 at the CVS Pharmacy on 18585 East Warren Avenue, the ticket that would make her a millionaire sat unassumingly until the winning numbers were announced. While the Power Play option, multiplying non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times for an additional $1, was not a part of her purchase, Blunt still walked away with a life-changing sum. It was reported that, available at Lottery retailers across the state and online, Powerball plays may be enhanced with a “Power Play” feature and even a "Double Play" option for extra chances to win.
