Last Friday afternoon that concluded a week marked by numerous collisions on Interstate 45, a van driver astonishingly walked away unharmed after their vehicle became wedged under an 18-wheeler in Montgomery County. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the northbound I-45 feeder road, just south of FM 1488 near The Woodlands, as reported by KHOU.
Upon arriving at the 15000 block of I-45 S, The Woodlands Fire Department, alongside Montgomery County Hospital District and Needham Fire & Rescue/Montgomery County ESD #4, found the van literally lodged underneath the larger vehicle. In a remarkable turn of events, the driver of the van had managed to self-extricate without assistance and was found by Engine 106, which was first on the scene—a detail shared by the Woodlands Fire Department's Facebook page.
The intensity of the crash could easily have led to a different outcome, yet both the van's driver and the 18-wheeler's operator declined a trip to the hospital after being evaluated on-site by medical personnel. The rescue and recovery efforts were carried out with specialized equipment, including Paratech struts and air bags. These were used to lift the trailer off the van, and firefighters ultimately winched the smaller vehicle from beneath the truck to clear the roadway.
