Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced that Christian Diaz, 28, has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison. The sentence is for the fatal stabbing of Ahmed Almulaiki, a deli worker in East Harlem, in October 2021, according to a statement from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The incident began at 11:30 p.m. when Diaz entered the deli and started an argument about store credit. Deli staff, including Almulaiki, then armed themselves with a golf club and a stick. Diaz pulled out a knife. After Almulaiki missed a swing with the club, Diaz fatally stabbed him, causing his death. The trial detailed this chain of events.

Following the jury’s verdict on August 7, Diaz was found guilty of Manslaughter in the First Degree, resulting in the prison sentence. “Christian Diaz has been sentenced to a significant prison term for killing Ahmed Almulaiki, a hardworking deli worker who was supporting his family,” District Attorney Bragg stated, according to court documents and official statements.

After the incident, Diaz fled the scene and remained at large until his arrest by the NYPD in May 2022. District Attorney Bragg acknowledged the efforts of Detectives William Dunn and Rich Natal of the 23rd Precinct Detective Squad, Detectives Daniel Silverio and Munir Alhidami of the Regional Fugitive Task Force, as well as Assistant D.A. Joel Seidemann and the team in the District Attorney’s office who contributed to the prosecution of the case.
