A devastating blaze ravaged an old farmhouse on Freedom Road in Economy Township early this morning. The fire, which eyewitnesses report was intensely fierce, led to a total loss of the residence, as per the reports by WPXI. Economy Volunteer Fire Department Captain Mathew Books informed the press that the family who owned the home was fortunately not present at the time of the incident, having been out of town.
Captain Books expressed his profound relief, as detailed by WPXI, stating, "That's one of the biggest reliefs that we got was whenever the police department made contact with one of the neighbors and they said they reached out to the homeowners and found out that nobody was in the house." Despite this relief, tragedy struck for the homeowner's pets, with nine cats inside the home now unaccounted for, according to information provided by Books.
The firefighting effort was hindered by various challenges, including the house's location and nearby power lines. Captain Books detailed to WTAE the difficulties faced by the responding teams, saying, "The placement of the house, the fact that there's power lines everywhere. We couldn't get up through here until we got some stuff moved around, got things situated, apparatus coming in and all that. It all plays a crucial role into where we're going to place stuff."
With no reported injuries to humans, the fate of the cats remains a somber note amidst the aftermath of the conflagration. The State Fire Marshal is set to investigate and determine the cause of the fire.
