A 71-year-old hunter from the Village of Richfield was rescued after becoming lost in Jackson Marsh, Washington County, Wisconsin. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office's Facebook post, the man, who has Type 1 diabetes, became disoriented while pheasant hunting and called his wife when his blood sugar began to drop.
Emergency responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Fire Department, and Wisconsin DNR were dispatched at 12:46 p.m. They located the hunter using the What3Words app and a drone to pinpoint his position in the marsh.
Rescue teams reached the man and his dog within about 30 minutes, providing oral glucose to stabilize his blood sugar. Due to the difficult terrain, rescuers assisted him on foot, taking more than an hour to guide him out safely.
The man declined further medical transport after regaining stability and was reunited with his wife. Sheriff Martin Schulteis commended the coordinated response and use of technology that enabled the successful rescue.
