Boerne, Texas, a town where the natural beauty of the Hill Country is more than just a picturesque backdrop—it’s an integral part of daily life, thanks in large part to the efforts of the Parks and Recreation Department and people like Erick Alarcon. As the Recreation Coordinator, Alarcon is the man behind connecting Boerne citizens through a buffet of recreational activities and events that lace through the community calendar like the scenic trails threading through their parks. According to a recent feature by My Boerne News, Alarcon and his team deliver at least 35 events a year, from movies in the park to the Weihnachts Parade, ensuring there's always a communal pulse.
It's not just a game of admin and organization for this orchestrator of community engagement; it’s about creating moments of unity and joy. And Alarcon knows the stakes—"Because No. 1, we care about what we do, and No. 2, it could be someone’s first time coming out to one of our events. If we’re not giving it our all, that’s the reputation you’re going to leave with them," he told My Boerne News. His dedication transcends the numerous sports leagues he manages and echoes at the Municipal Pool, where his certified hands have both improved operations and cultivated a lifeguard culture that boasts an impressive retention rate.
Erick Alarcon previously worked with the City of El Paso’s Parks and Recreation Department, where he developed programs for seniors and athletics. He now oversees Boerne Parks and Recreation events, many of which are free to the public to promote accessibility and community engagement. Alarcon highlighted the community’s focus on helping others as part of the department’s ongoing efforts in local recreational programming.
