Ferris State University has definitively declined a proposal from the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners to install a statue of the late conservative influencer Charlie Kirk on its Big Rapids campus, per recent reports from multiple sources.
The suggestion to erect a statue in Kirk's honor emerged following his death on September 10 after he was fatally shot at a rally in Utah. Commissioner Chris Zimmerman of the Mecosta County Board presented the proposal with a vision to commemorate Kirk's "overwhelming contribution to society," as described in an article by WZZM13.
In a letter to Ferris State President Dr. Bill Pink, Zimmerman suggested that a statue could not only honor Kirk's legacy but also offer financial benefits through alumni contributions. The letter noted that the art department at Ferris might be involved in designing the statue, and the county commission appeared ready to share the costs associated with this "important undertaking," according to WZZM13.
However, in a responsive correspondence dated eight days later, President Pink firmly rejected the proposal. He emphasized the university's policy of limiting campus statues to those who have made "significant, direct contributions" to Ferris State. This principle is exemplified by the single statue on campus of the university's founder, Woodbridge N. Ferris. Pink's decision was echoed in statements obtained by WOOD TV, clarifying that Kirk had no recorded visits to the university, and thus did not meet the criteria for campus commemoration.
The decision was not without its backdrop of local and national attention. Kirk's assassination had sparked vigils throughout West Michigan and an extensive public memorial service attended by prominent political figures. Despite these outpourings of grief and respect for Kirk, Ferris State University maintained its stance, ensuring that statues on its grounds reflect a direct and significant impact on the institution itself. Pink's refusal acknowledged the university's condemnation of violence and sympathy for Kirk's family, without departing from established campus traditions, as reported by Deadline Detroit.
