An American Airlines flight bound for New York was compelled to return to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, following reports from passengers and crew of a sickening odor. According to ABC7, the incident occurred just before 5 p.m. and involved American Airlines flight 274. Reports indicate that pilots noticed an unusual smell and taste, which led them to don oxygen masks as a precaution.
Upon the jet's return to LAX, a total of seven passengers were evaluated for ailments potentially associated with the fumes, but none required hospitalization, as WABC-TV reported. ABC7 further detailed that, although emergency services were summoned, no dangerous conditions were found within the cabin. Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 confirmed the aircraft, an Airbus A321, performed a loop before landing safely back at the airport.
In a statement acquired by FOX Business, an American Airlines spokesperson addressed the incident, saying, "We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience." The airline also indicated that the aircraft was pulled from service for a thorough inspection by its maintenance team. Additionally, the incident unfolded amid the backdrop of a government shutdown, placing strain on the nation's air traffic controllers and TSA officers, as per Reuters.
While the situation was resolved without significant medical emergencies, it added to a series of recent disruptions affecting the airline. Weeks prior, an American Airlines flight making its journey from LAX to Boston had to abort takeoff due to a runway incursion by another aircraft, according to the Mirror. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that AeroLogic Flight 619 crossed a runway without authorization. The American Airlines flight in question eventually departed later the same evening.
