In a move to combat the rising issue of food insecurity, the Giant Eagle Foundation is donating $1 million to multiple regional food banks across its operational states. This donation, announced amidst a concerning surge in the demand for food assistance, arrives just as the nation braces for the cessation of SNAP benefits for around 42 million Americans, following a U.S. government shutdown.
The end of SNAP benefits slated for November 1 adds stress to a pre-existing condition in food banks that have already been grappling with a steep increase in need. As detailed by CBS News, the donation from the Giant Eagle Foundation aims to be a bulwark against the tide of food insecurity affecting the nation. "We are grateful for the steadfast leadership our food bank partners continue to demonstrate amid these extraordinary challenges," Giant Eagle President and CEO Bill Artman was quoted.
Apart from the direct financial support, Giant Eagle is making it easier for customers to contribute through a register donation campaign. Shoppers at over 200 Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets can either choose a specific donation amount or round up their total purchase sum, with all proceeds earmarked for the food banks serving their local community. The campaign, according to WPXI, is set to run through December 24 and encourages both customers and staff to contribute to this critical cause.
"Importantly, every dollar raised through this campaign will directly support the food bank serving the local community where the donation is made," Giant Eagle stated via CBS News, further emphasizing the direct impact of each contribution. In addition to monetary donations, Giant Eagle has also consistently donated meals, amounting to the equivalent of 20 million annually, bolstering its reputation as a corporate pillar in the fight against hunger.
