Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Michael “Mike” Holley as the new District Attorney of the 9th Judicial District in Montgomery County. The announcement, which surfaced on Wednesday, indicates Holley will hold the position through the end of 2026, unless a successor has been elected and is ready to serve. A seasoned member of the State Bar of Texas, Holley steps up from his prior role as First Assistant District Attorney within the same office.
Notably, Holley brings a distinctive blend of military and legal experience to the table, something Governor Abbott highlighted in the appointment declaration. After over thirteen years of service, including time in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, Holley parted the United States Army with an Honorable Discharge. His military tenure involved handling some of their most significant legal cases. "Mike Holley's dedication to justice and his service to our country prepare him well for this important job," Abbott said in a statement released by the Office of the Governor Greg Abbott.
Holley, a resident of Conroe, boasts a strong educational background – a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Abilene Christian University, a Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law, and a Master of Laws from the United States Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School. His appointment has received support from local law enforcement and community leaders, who note Holley's commitment to the rule of law and his track record in Montgomery County.
Montgomery County residents have until December 31, 2026, to see the impact Holley will have in his capacity as District Attorney. Should another candidate assume the position post-election, Holley's successor would be sworn in upon their qualification.
