A Harris County judge has denied a request to lower the bond for Jose Humberto Romero, who is accused of intoxication manslaughter in the crash that killed USPS worker Steve Marks. Romero’s defense asked to reduce the bond from $250,000 to $50,000, citing his long-term residency in Houston. The court said that if Romero is released on bond, he must follow conditions including a curfew, a no-driving order, and surrendering any foreign passport, as reported by KHOU.
A Dodge Ram driven by Romero rear-ended a USPS mail truck operated by Steve Marks, causing the truck to hit a tree on Antoine Drive, a road known for speeding, according to FOX26 Houston. Marks, a USPS worker and Marine Corps veteran, was killed in the crash. Romero, who has a prior DWI from 2023, appeared intoxicated at the scene and was taken into custody.
Steve Marks, 58, a USPS employee at the Cornerstone Post Office, has died. Charlotte Mays, the neighborhood HOA president, told KHOU, "He was our friend. He was a great guy. He will be truly missed and just irreplaceable." His niece, Nikole Marks, said she appreciated the community's support. Friends and residents created a roadside memorial and shared memories of Marks, including his humor, kindness, and love for billiards. Tiffany Torres, a friend, said, "He would give you the shirt off his back" and "He was always genuine." The USPS is providing counseling for employees affected by his death.
