Amid the current federal government shutdown stretching beyond the two-week mark, passengers traveling through Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, alongside others in Seattle and Phoenix, won't be seeing a certain kind of political messaging while waiting in the TSA lines. According to News 3, the airport has rejected a TSA video that pins the blame for the shutdown on Democrats, saying it goes against the neutral spirit of the airport's communications to the public.
While guiding travelers through the labyrinth of the security process is standard, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem appears in a video doing something quite different—calling out the opposition party for the impasse which has left many federal workers unpaid. "We will continue to do all that we can to avoid delays that will impact you — and it is our hope is that Democrats will soon recognize the importance of opening the government," Noem can be heard saying in the video posted on a White House rapid response page, as noted by Fox5Vegas.
In a move to steer clear of disseminating biased politics, especially during a sensitive time, the Harry Reid International Airport’s stance remains firm. A statement, highlighted by Fox5Vegas, emphasized this commitment: “Harry Reid International Airport has declined to display a recently provided TSA video, as its content included political messaging that did not align with the neutral, informational nature of the public service announcements typically shown at the security checkpoints."
The refusal to showcase the video isn't just about keeping the peace with travelers. It's also about adhering to legal considerations—a nod to the Hatch Act, which restricts political activities in government workplaces. Striving for neutrality in an enviroment not meant for political friction, Luke Nimno, the Clark County Department of Aviation Public Information Officer, told News 3, "Additionally, as a facility that hosts federal operations, we remain mindful of the Hatch Act’s restrictions on political activity in government workplaces, we remain committed to providing travelers with clear information that supports a smooth and efficient screening process."
