The Hickory Police Department is stepping up its game this October with a targeted traffic safety initiative dubbed "P.A.C.T." – Pay Attention in City Traffic. As detailed on the city's official website, the focus of the enforcement will be on a stretch of Hwy 127, spanning from 29th Avenue Drive NW to 1st Avenue SE, as well as on 5th Street SE, between 2nd Avenue SE and 8th Avenue SE. Drivers, consider yourselves forewarned – authorities will be keeping a close eye on red-light runners, the phone-distracted, speedsters, and general traffic violators.
Not only motorists are being called to attention. Pedestrians are being encouraged to up their street-crossing game – by utilizing crosswalks, sticking to corners or designated areas, minding signal indicators, and making themselves seen with reflective wear in the night hours, according to the city's announcement. And for those behind the wheel, it's not just about obeying stoplights and speed limits. The police department is urging drivers to yield to pedestrians, which may mean extra vigilance at crosswalks, intersections, and even during turns.
As cyclists are a part of the Hickory community tapestry, motorists are reminded that bicycles have as much right to the road as any car or truck – meaning sharing the road and respecting cyclists is not just courtesy, it’s law. Cyclists too are reminded to follow suit, riding in the same direction as traffic and adhering to traffic controls just as any other vehicle would.
The broad message from the Hickory Police Department is clear: whether on foot, two wheels, or four – it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the roads safe. This form of city-wide vigilance, connectivity, and respect can significantly reduce the prospect of traffic-related mishaps. "All citizens utilizing City of Hickory roadways are asked to remain alert and obey all traffic laws to ensure the safety of all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians," states the City of Hickory.
