The State of Maryland has reached a settlement with Constellation Energy regarding the future of the Conowingo Dam, a significant source of renewable energy. According to WMAR2 News, the agreement includes a commitment from Constellation to invest $341 million in efforts to protect the Chesapeake Bay. Addressing concerns about the dam's environmental impact, the settlement comes after nearly a decade of debate between environmentalists and the electric company.
Under the terms of the deal, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has lauded the dual benefits of clean energy production and environmental stewardship. "The bay holds the key to the future of our culture," Moore stated, per WMAR2 News. Constellation Energy's President & CEO Joe Dominguez highlighted the dam as a critical energy provider, stating that "This resource was called on over 4,200 times this year alone to produce power to respond to peak demands here in Maryland."
The settlement also resolves years of litigation over the dam, which has been an environmental flashpoint. The Maryland Matters reports that the new agreement mandates Constellation to adopt pollution reduction measures, such as planting trees and underwater grasses, and spend over $60 million on enhancing the dam's fish passages and controlling invasive species.
Moreover, the agreement necessitates an $18.7 million dedicated effort to assess and potentially begin dredging the dam's reservoir.
