Big plans are in motion for the historic Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx, with officials celebrating the City Council's approval of a proposal to transform the century-old structure into a sprawling community hub. The project, dubbed the "Together for Kingsbridge Vision Plan," was given the green light in a recent vote, signaling a major step forward for the neighborhood's development. The plan includes a two-phase overhaul of the site featuring entertainment venues, affordable housing, and community spaces, according to the NYC Mayor's Office.

"From training troops during the first World War to distributing food during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kingsbridge Armory has served our city for more than a century. With today’s vote, we begin work on the next chapter in its dynamic history and building a brighter future for the Bronx,” Mayor Eric Adams said, as per the official statements from the NYC Mayor's Office. The armory will see an influx of commercial, cultural, and manufacturing space – and, together with an adjacent development will bring more than 500 units of affordable housing to the borough.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed excitement about the project's potential to unify Bronx communities, while the Borough President Vanessa Gibson highlighted the future prospects for economic growth and inclusion. "This project has been decades in the making, and now we’re finally getting it done. The Kingsbridge Armory will remain a cornerstone of the Bronx, driving economic growth and strengthening Kingsbridge Heights,” Governor Hochul told reporters, as reported by the NYC Mayor's Office.

Part of the project's significance lies in its projected economic impact, with the city expecting nearly $2.9 billion added to the economy and approximately 3,600 jobs created. Andrew Kimball, NYCEDC President and CEO, remarked on the close collaboration with community members and stakeholders that shaped the project's direction, as per statements obtained by the NYC Mayor's Office. The development group, 8th Regiment Partners, and local coalition NWBCCC have already penned an agreement to ensure that environmentally sustainable practices and community ownership are key components of the redevelopment.

Looking ahead, the groundwork for the first phase, which includes a state-of-the-art venue and over 25,000 square feet of community space, is set to commence in 2026 with completion aimed for 2030. The second phase, delivering crucial affordable housing, is expected to wrap by 2032. The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition's executive director, Sandra Lobo, hailed the vote as "a monumental achievement for our coalition, and a powerful testament to what’s possible through sustained collaborative community leadership," as she told the Mayor's Office. The redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory is backed by a $200 million investment from Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul, with additional funding from local officials and a federal grant.
