The family of Hector Vasquez, a 35-year-old mechanic killed in a recent spree shooting, is seeking answers from the Houston Police Department. They are questioning how the shooter, a convicted felon out on bond, obtained a firearm and why the family has not been updated on the investigation.
Yara Vasquez, Hector’s widow, described her late husband, saying, "He was a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend. Kind, funny, loyal, someone who lit up every room he walked into," according to Click2Houston. Their attorney, Randall Kallinen, said the family wants to understand how the tragedy occurred and why authorities did not remove the shooter from the streets sooner.
Hector Vasquez was killed by gunman William Lewis, who also killed two others, including a woman he previously dated and another mechanic near Vasquez’s shop, while Vasquez was on a speakerphone call. Yara Cruz said, "I will not grow old without the man I planned to grow old with," and Hipolito Vasquez, Hector’s father, said his son was on speakerphone during the shooting. The family said they have not received updates from the Houston Police Department, with Cruz adding, "The system has failed us too many times. We can't keep letting this happen," as reported by KHOU.
