Houston Mayor John Whitmire addressed the violent crime task force initiative announced by Governor Greg Abbott, which will launch in Houston and Harris County. According to Click2Houston, Whitmire said the city has been working with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and welcomed the additional state resources.

The initiative will involve DPS Special Agents, Texas Rangers, and aircraft units working with the Houston Police Department (HPD), the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and other local law enforcement agencies. Click2Houston reported that the task force will bring additional personnel, forensic science, and investigative tools not currently available to HPD.

Governor Abbott also highlighted efforts to strengthen accountability in the judicial system, encouraging support for Proposition 3, which would allow judges to deny bail to suspects charged with violent crimes. Whitmire emphasized the need for accountability for violent offenders. Residents can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on freeways and in neighborhoods as the program begins, with a focus on reducing road rage and violent crime.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo responded to the initiative, telling KHOU 11 she is encouraged by the state’s support and noted recent county investments in public safety. District Attorney Sean Teare also supported the program, citing his office’s efforts to secure longer sentences for violent offenders.

Abbott did not specify which neighborhoods will be included in the initiative but stated that if the program proves effective in Houston, it could expand to other regions in Texas.
