Early Saturday morning, a Houston police officer suffered injuries after a truck collided with his patrol vehicle while stationed on the North Freeway (I-45) near West Road. As reported by FOX26 Houston, the incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the entrance ramp to the freeway. The officer was engaged in securing the perimeter of a prior accident site and was utilizing his patrol car to block the ramp from incoming traffic when the violent collision occurred.
According to the Houston Police Department, the officer's presence was crucial to divert traffic from the crash scene as he attempted to shield it with his vehicle. However, this attempt was thwarted when a pickup truck, maneuvering the ramp, rammed into the patrol car. In a statement obtained by KHOU, Sgt. Mike Barrow of the Houston Police Department conveyed that the injured officer was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. The severity of the crash left the police vehicle with substantial damage.
The driver of the pickup truck involved was subsequently apprehended and is now in police custody. The authorities are delving into the circumstances leading up to the crash, with initial inquiries suggesting the possible involvement of alcohol. Both FOX26 Houston and KHOU have been following the progression of the investigation closely. At present, the identities of both the injured officer and the driver responsible for the crash have not been disclosed.
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Sgt. Barrow conveyed to KHOU that "the biggest concern was for the officer and he appears to be OK." This statement underscores the department's relief given the potential for more grievous outcomes. The investigation continues as HPD determines the full extent of the contributing factors, including any potential impairment by the driver at the time of the collision.
