Houston authorities are stepping up safety measures for trick-or-treaters through the "Halloween Safe Initiative," a joint effort between the Houston Police Department and Harris County Precinct 7 Constable's Office. The operation focuses on ensuring a secure environment as officers monitor more than 1,300 registered sex offenders across 23 districts, as reported by Click2Houston.
Patrols will visit offenders’ homes from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to ensure compliance with restrictions such as no candy distribution, no Halloween decorations, and keeping porch lights off. Officials stated that the initiative’s purpose is preventative, aiming to maintain neighborhood safety rather than create fear during Halloween festivities.
As Halloween approaches, safety officials are advising parents to review precautionary measures and utilize available resources such as the Texas Sex Offender Registry’s online interactive map, which allows users to locate registered offenders in their area by entering a home address, according to KHOU. Authorities also outlined safety guidelines for the holiday, including traveling in groups, remaining in well-lit neighborhoods, checking all treats before consumption, and keeping walkways clear. Homeowners are further advised to use battery-operated lights instead of open flames in decorations, as per Click2Houston.
