Kristina Chambers, was convicted of manslaughter for the April 2023 crash that killed Joseph McMullin. Her Porsche went onto the sidewalk and struck McMullin outside Voodoo Doughnut on Westheimer, according to FOX 26 Houston. The verdict followed a trial that included testimony and technical analysis.
Chambers was convicted of manslaughter after a crash while driving under the influence, with an alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit and cocaine found in her vehicle. The crash happened after she and an acquaintance left a Montrose bar, and her Porsche was estimated to be traveling over 100 mph, as reported by Houston Chronicle. The jury deliberated for about eight hours over two days after four days of testimony, which included McMullin’s date, police officers, and a crash reconstruction expert. Prosecutors noted that ride-share options were available that night.
Chambers’ defense asked for leniency, noting she had no prior felony convictions and may be pregnant, while prosecutors mentioned her 2008 juvenile arrest for pill possession, as per Houston Chronicle. The jury convicted her of manslaughter, considering her substance use and the excessive speed of her car, rather than the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. She faces two to 20 years in prison, with probation also possible. The defense argued that the cocaine in her system could have been there for days and said she was not drunk, citing a meal she ate that evening. Sentencing will take place soon.
