Yesterday, Howard County heralded the start of a new chapter for community green spaces with a ceremonial shovel to the ground. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, teaming up with the Department of Recreation & Parks Bureau Chief Nicola Morgal, initiated the construction of the forthcoming Ilchester Park and Recreation Center.

Previously the stomping grounds of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, the 21-acre spread at 5042 Ilchester Road in Ellicott City dodged a close call with a 105-housing-unit development fate last June. With the county cashing in, the land is now set to sprout recreational programs and open space, in lieu of cookie-cutter houses. "This property has long served as a place where people of all ages, especially Girl Scouts young and old, could gather, explore, and connect with nature," Ball conveyed in a statement, as reported by the Howard County news release. "Now, through our new Ilchester Park and Recreation Center, we will continue the site’s legacy, welcoming people of all ages and abilities."

Phase one of this project, weather allowing, aims for a summer 2026 delivery, promising renovations to the former Clementine Peterson Activity Center and the addition of a preschool playground that resides next to the building. Coming improvements also include an expanded entrance and an extra parking facility, topped with some vital utility upgrades.

Once the initial dust settles, phase two will usher in another playground, aligned with nature, and raise a second pavilion. Additionally, it's set to bulk out the activity center with a multi-use space, introducing a movable partition, and weave various trails for walking amidst nature's art. A kitchen for the center and other pinpointed uplifts are on the agenda for subsequent stages of the site's transformation. Tucking Camp Ilchester into the county's fold echoes Ball's tenure-long choreography of land dances, amassing over 205 acres of open space to the tune of conservation and recreation since his 2018 commencement.
