Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell was released from a Las Vegas hospital following an alarming incident of extreme cramping during the WNBA playoffs, as confirmed in a statement on the team’s social media. Mitchell left Game 5 against the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday after being assisted off the court in the third quarter. She had contributed 15 points in 23 minutes before the incident, according to News3LV.
While the initial concern was extreme cramping, in a statement shared on social media, Mitchell disclosed the diagnosis of Rhabdomyolysis, stating, "I went into a sense of numbness/paralyzing feeling with no movement from my lower extremities for up to 5 to 7 seconds." Despite this worrying condition she insisted, "will be fine very soon," further detailing her current situation, "walking and moving at a slow pace," as mentioned by Bleacher Report.
At a critical juncture of the playoffs, Mitchell's health scare posed a stark contrast to her towering season performance, where she led the team with 20.2 points per game during the regular season and 23.3 points in the postseason. Nevertheless, the Aces' A'ja Wilson lauded Mitchell's exceptional season, saying, "She's just had a phenomenal season," and expressed hope for her recovery, "I really hope the Indiana Fever take care of her," as noted by Bleacher Report.
The Fever’s resilience shone through after Mitchell’s departure from the court, as the team overcame a nine-point deficit to push the game into overtime; unfortunately, they eventually conceded a 107-98 loss. This game marked the end of a breakthrough season in which the Fever reached the semifinals for the first time, with expectations to carry this momentum into the 2026 season, where Mitchell’s health will be a key factor.
