Parents looking to ensure their child's safety seat is up to standard can mark their calendars for November 13, when the Janesville Fire Department (JFD) and Janesville Police Department (JPD) are set to host a child safety seat inspection. The event, which is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. at Fire Station #1 located at 303 Milton Ave., will provide professional checks by certified technicians from the JFD and JPD.
According to an announcement on the City of Janesville's official website, each inspection is expected to last roughly 30 minutes and is offered free of charge. While not required, donations are welcomed by the departments, with those contributions directly supporting the inspection program's operational costs. Even for the parents who haven't faced the realization yet that their safety seat might be outdated or unsafe, there will be new seats available for purchase on-site, should the need arise during the inspection.
Appointments are not mandatory but are encouraged to mitigate the wait time at the event. This is a proactive approach by the JFD and JPD to address child safety concerns and ensure that community members are using the appropriate safety seats for their children. The City of Janesville notes the importance of these inspections, as they help in identifying seats that have been recalled, expired, or are no longer safe due to previous accidents or wear and tear.
By attending the event, parents will also have the opportunity to learn proper installation techniques for child safety seats, ensuring they leave not just with a seat that's been inspected but also with the knowledge to make adjustments as necessary. "Parents may conveniently obtain a new one on-site if an inspection finds a safety seat unsafe," the police informed on the City of Janesville website.
