The Las Vegas Raiders halted a four-game losing streak with a 20-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans, showcasing a dominant defensive performance that has been absent in recent weeks. According to AP News, linebackers Devin White and Maxx Crosby and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu were instrumental in the Raiders' win, propelling the team to improve to a 2-4 record while the Titans fell to 1-5.
Under head coach Pete Carroll, Las Vegas managed to finally string together a cohesive game, with special teams even starting to rectify previous errors. But it was the defense that took the spotlight, pressuring Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward consistently and recording six sacks. Carroll expressed his relief and pride in his squad's performance, stating, "These guys deserve to feel like they feel right now," as noted by AP News. Offensively, Geno Smith and Ashton Jeanty put up enough to secure the win, although their stats didn't necessarily scream dominance.
Defensive standout Devin White managed to recall his days as a top defender for Tampa Bay with nine tackles, a sack, an interception, and a forced fumble; a "stat line" Coach Carroll praised highly. The Raiders' defensive pressure was unanticipated by the Titans, especially the increased blitzing, leaving Titans coach Brian Callahan to acknowledge their unexpected and effective strategy.
In their own coverage of the game, the Raiders' official website reported that the Silver and Black's special teams unit made a significant recovery from previous missteps, highlighted by Dylan Laube and Alex Bachman's return game. AJ Cole performed admirably too, managing to succinctly punt the ball after recovering quickly from an injury the previous week.
The hard-fought victory allowed the Raiders their first home win of the season and provided a sense of collective achievement, especially for the defense. As Laulu told AP News, "This is a good feeling knowing we go to work every day and we practice really hard," and "Our mindset is to be the heartbeat of the team." The Raiders will hope to carry this momentum into their next game as they face AFC West rival Kansas City, while the Titans aim to rebound against New England.
During this matchup, injuries did play a role. The Titans lost kicker Joey Slye to a calf injury and outside linebacker Femi Oladejo during the game. The Raiders had to go without tight end Brock Bowers due to a knee injury and witnessed running back Dylan Laube getting injured in the second half.
The Las Vegas community had additional cause for celebration as the Las Vegas Aces were honored before the game for their recent WNBA championship, lighting the Al Davis memorial torch to the sound of roaring fans.
