Leakey, a small Texas town, has recently hit a high note by securing a spot as the 90th region to join the exclusive list of Music Friendly Texas Certified Communities. This recognition comes from the Texas Music Office (TMO) under Governor Greg Abbott's watch, highlighting Leakey's commitment to the state's flourishing music scene.
On October 8th, as per an announcement by the Office of the Texas Governor, the certification acknowledges the city's efforts to support music-related economic development. With the TMO's backing, Texas can boast over 196,000 music industry jobs and an annual economic impact of $31 billion. But it's more than just numbers; it's about cultivating a culture. “With support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounts for more than 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31 billion in annual economic activity statewide," Abbott stated. "Together, we will continue to work alongside communities in every region of our state to create good-paying jobs and boost economic growth.”
The designation holds particular meaning for Leakey residents, who take pride in their local musical traditions. Echoing this sentiment, Real County Judge Bella A. Rubio reminisced about her youth, filled with the sounds of harmonicas, guitars, and banjos. “Growing up in Leakey and having the pleasure of listening to local musicians play instruments such as the harmonica, guitar, and banjo on their front porches was the very thing that always brought such joy and peace to my soul,” Judge Rubio told the Governor's press office. Moreover, local business entrepreneurs, like Carole Petrovics, anticipate the title will unlock new potential for the community and those who visit the area.
The official ceremony to mark Leakey's certification falls on October 11, replete with city officials, community leaders, and an assured dose of musical entertainment. This will take place at the Bent Rim Grill, with TMO Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Gini Mascorro slated to present the designation. Leakey's own musical gatherings, like events by Songs on the Frio's Jan Larsen, speak to the town's “big soul.” “Being designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community is a tremendous honor for Leakey,” Larsen said. “This recognition not only celebrates our deep love for music but also strengthens the economic vitality of our town. We may be small, but we have a big soul. Music is an important part of who we are.”
