In a tense yet fortunate turn of events earlier this week, a Lee County ambulance driver endured a medical emergency behind the wheel, leading to an accident that left both the driver and a paramedic passenger in need of urgent care. The incident, according to CBS Austin, took place in Bastrop County as the vehicle was returning from a patient transport operation.

The driver, prior to the crash, managed to maneuver the ambulance off the roadway before it collided with a tree. The passenger, a trained paramedic, immediately signaled another ambulance, from Lee County EMS that was a few miles away – a move that swiftly brought additional emergency responders to the scene. Despite the urgency of the situation, the passenger began rendering aid to the incapacitated driver. "All three paramedics started patient care on the paramedic driver prior to anyone else arriving," noted Lee County Emergency Medical Services in a statement obtained by CBS Austin.

Extrication was necessary to free the driver from the wreckage, with both the driver and passenger paramedic subsequently being transported to Austin for treatment. While the passenger paramedic was released the following morning, the driver was braced for a longer recuperation period. Thankfully, no other individuals were embroiled in the accident.

Embodying a spirit of solidarity, Lee County EMS expressed gratitude and resilience in a post shared to Facebook. "We are resilient; our EMS family always pulls together in times like these and we will continue patient care as usual," the agency underscored, as reported by KVUE. This sentiment was echoed across the tight-knit EMS community, as support for the recovery of their colleagues remains steadfast.
