In an instance showcasing the breadth of their duty, deputies from the Macomb County Sheriff's Office took on the unexpected task of wildlife rescue last Wednesday. ClickOnDetroit reports that after receiving a call in Harrison Township about a deer ensnared in a backyard hammock, a sergeant and deputy were dispatched to the scene just after 8 a.m.
Upon arrival, the officers found the young deer in a struggle against the entangling comfort designed for humans. As the animal labored to break free, the two deputies carefully orchestrated the rescue, with the sergeant and deputy managing to free the distressed deer. In a twist of their typical service, caught on video, the ending was happy as the now-liberated deer hoofed it into the safety of the nearby woods.
Mirroring the sentiment of an animal inadvertently caught in the trappings of civilization, a video released by the Macomb County Sheriff's Office showed the pair's precise efforts to cut the deer loose. "After a few tense moments, they were able to cut the deer free. It quickly ran off back into the woods," the sheriff's office said in a statement picked up by WXYZ.
While a deer caught in a backyard scene might be far removed from the high-speed chases and criminal arrests often associated with law enforcement, sheriff deputies here proved their willingness to extend their service to all living creatures. "This was certainly not a typical call, but it’s a great example of how members of the MCSO are ready to help in any situation — whether it’s on the roadways, in the community, or even in someone’s backyard," the sheriff's office commented, as conveyed by WOODTV. Their gloves were swapped for scissors, and the MCSO officers were seen to be as adept in freeing wildlife as they are in protecting human life and property.
