On a recent sunny afternoon in Maize, a heartwarming scene unfolded beside Maize Road, where the students and faculty of Maize Elementary School gathered to bid farewell to Nellie Berry Stanley, a cherished resident and neighbor. The cheerful procession from the school to Stanley's home was a tribute to the almost seven decades of shared history and companionship, according to an article published by the Columbus City Schools.
Nellie Berry Stanley, who witnessed the construction of Maize Elementary and saw it grow from a quiet plot of land to a vibrant educational institution, held a special place in the community, always offering smiles and kind words to the passing students since she moved in back in 1957, the kids, the staff, and everyone in between cherished her presence, and as she prepares to move from her long-standing home, the students showed their appreciation through handmade cards and personal messages, Stanley told Maize Elementary that she would deeply miss the daily joy brought by the children.
The farewell event came about following a heartfelt letter from Berry Stanley to the school, in which she expressed her fondness for the children and shared memories of her many years living beside the school. This gesture of kindness was met with an outpouring of love from the Maize Elementary community, a school where heartfelt connections between neighbors and students clearly run deep.
Commending the deep connection she had with the community, Berry Stanley said in a statement obtained by Columbus City Schools, "The children of Maize have given me many years of friendship and enjoyment," honoring those years, the students reciprocated with expressions of gratitude, their cards and gifts serving as physical representations of the invisible bonds formed over countless shared moments, the simplicity of the moment belied the profound impact of the relationship that had grown, the card from every student, every memory shared, was a testament to the community's recognition of Berry Stanley's role as more than a neighbor, but as a beloved member of their daily lives.
Those involved in the ad-hoc parade could feel the significance of this transition, not just for Berry Stanley but for the entire neighborhood. With each step down the sidewalk, they acknowledged an era passing and a new one beginning, their actions embodying the values of community and connection that Maize Elementary teaches to all its students.
