Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has announced the guilty plea of 21-year-old Luis Gil in connection with the fatal stabbing of Hugo Morales on Pier 84 back in July of 2023. Gil pleaded guilty to one count of Second Degree Murder and under his plea agreement, he is expected to receive a sentence of 18 years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for January 14, 2026, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
The incident occurred when Morales, who had immigrated to the United States with aspirations to build his mother a house in Guatemala, was relaxing on a bench near where Gil and his friends were sitting. "Today, Luis Gil is facing accountability for fatally stabbing 33-year-old Hugo Morales in an unprovoked attack on Pier 84," said Bragg. "The defendant’s egregious actions abruptly cut Mr. Morales’s life short," he further remarked, expressing sympathy for Morales's family. The stabbing was reported to have been entirely unprovoked, Gil went out of his way to bother Morales before the attack, attempting to engage him by looming over, putting his bookbag by Morales's feet, and traversing the bench, as per the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
After the troubling interaction, Gil took out a knife from his backpack, concealed it in his shorts, and later returned to stab Morales once in the chest. Following the attack, Gil fled to the subway and took an Amtrak train to Chicago before being apprehended on July 17, 2023, four days later. Morales was transported to Morningside Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Assistant D.A.s Sarah Khan and Christina Awad from Trial Bureau 40 are handling the prosecution, under the supervision of the former Bureau Chief Robert Ferrari, and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo. Former Investigative Analyst McCall Moran provided valuable assistance on the case. The resolution of this tragic event was aided in part by NYPD's detective work, especially Detective Jay Poggi of the Midtown North Precinct Detective Squad, Detective Scott Williams of the Detective Borough Manhattan South Homicide Squad, and Officers Timothy Riordan, and Cheng Pak of the 10th Precinct. The cross-jurisdictional efforts of the Amtrak and Chicago Police Departments were also recognized for their contributions to the investigation and ultimately, Gil's capture.
