Amid the federal government's shutdown, Mayor Muriel Bowser has taken a clear stance on keeping DC's wheels turning. In a declaration highlighted by the Mayor's office, Bowser assured both residents and visitors that the city would persevere despite the congressional gridlock. "A federal government shutdown will not shut down the DC Government," she stated, emphasizing the city's resilience. The announcement was made following the shutdown that started just after midnight yesterday, as reported by the Mayor's office.
Bowser's commitment to the city includes uninterrupted public services, maintaining clean parks, ensuring safety on the streets, and keeping classrooms open. With the federal Office of Management and Budget yet to lay down further instructions, the Mayor's office assured that no immediate changes or lapses in benefits are currently anticipated, yet maintaining vigilance for any shifts in the situation.
The city's contingency plans for furloughed federal workers include unemployment insurance benefits accessible through the Department of Employment Services (DOES). Filing for these benefits can be done online, with details and processes laid out on the agency's website. At the same time, social service agencies are set to keep the public informed about any operational changes prompted by the ongoing shutdown.
The Mayor's office also affirmed that the DC Department of Human Services will proceed with the issuance of October benefits for SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid programs. In her announcement, Bowser advised residents to continue relying on their federal benefits, notably for essentials like food and medical care, reassuring continuity of support for the time being. If a resolution to the funding deadlock is not reached soon, the city plans to notify affected individuals about any potential impacts to their benefit payments – highlighting a proactive approach to mitigate uncertainty.
