The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued a permit for a sight-impaired fawn to be placed in a specialized educational facility instead of being released into the wild. "Fawns and other white-tailed deer are native species of wild animals that belong in the wild. They aren't meant to be pets," said DNR deputy public information officer John Pepin, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The fawn was brought to the facility by the Detroit Animal Welfare Group, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has not disclosed the location. Pepin added, “The plight of this wild fawn has generated tremendous bipartisan support from legislators and people across Michigan and beyond.”

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources issued a Live Animal Programs permit for a partially sight-impaired fawn. The permit was approved after a veterinarian assessment and review by the DNR’s Wildlife Division permit specialist. It allows the fawn, donated by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, to be used for educational purposes. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is also involved in ongoing legal cases with the Detroit Animal Welfare Group, including other wildlife cases, and is not commenting on them until they are resolved.
