Michigan gas prices increased by 29 cents in one week, bringing the statewide average for regular unleaded to $3.08 per gallon, American Automobile Association reports. This puts Michigan slightly above both last month and the same time last year, and about $46 is now needed to fill a 15-gallon tank—still $11 less than July 2024 highs.
"Motorists across Michigan are seeing much higher prices at the pump, with the state average going back above $3 a gallon," AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland said, according to CBS News Detroit. Despite flat gasoline demand from the Energy Information Administration, prices in Michigan have surpassed the national average of $3.05 per gallon, as reported by Upper Michigan's Source.
Fuel prices in Michigan went up after a fire and power outage at BP’s Whiting refinery in Indiana caused a temporary slowdown. Operations are now back online. Metro Detroit gas is about $3.00 per gallon, up 16 cents from last week but still 20 cents lower than this time last year. Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Saginaw are around $3.15 to $3.13, while Traverse City and Marquette are lower at $2.86 and $2.94. American Automobile Association says drivers can save fuel by combining trips and driving carefully, as per WXYZ.
