The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has expressed its approval of the newly signed Fiscal Year 2026 budget by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams highlighted the fundamental aim of the budget to strengthen regulatory oversight and promote the integrity of gaming within the state. "This budget reinforces the state’s commitment to protecting Michiganders through strong regulatory oversight, promoting integrity in gaming, and ensuring our agency has the resources needed to uphold public trust," Williams said, per the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

According to the MGCB, the Fiscal Year 2026 budget is set to bolster efforts to safeguard consumers, combat illegal gaming, and maintain secure gambling environments across Michigan. The board sees this as an essential move, especially in light of Detroit's commercial casinos reporting significant revenue with approximately $104.3 million generated in state taxes from various gaming activities in the previous year. These taxes support educational initiatives, directly benefiting Michigan schools and students.

Last year saw a notable increase in iGaming and internet sports betting, contributing to the economic vitality of the region. Both commercial and tribal gaming operations reported a substantial combined growth in gross receipts — a 23.8% increase from the previous year, amounting to $2.861 billion. Adjusted gross receipts indicated a 22.3% growth, reaching $2.594 billion. These figures underscore the significance of online betting in boosting state revenues.

MGCB's reports also show that operators paid $466.1 million in taxes and fees to the State of Michigan. Of this, the majority — $451.4 million — came from iGaming activities, and a smaller portion, $14.7 million, was contributed by internet sports betting. This revenue, particularly a sizable $400.7 million directed to the School Aid Fund via the Internet Gaming Fund and Internet Sports Betting Fund, underlines the fiscal contributions of the gaming industry to educational funding.
