Michigan State Police recently clamped down on two interconnected illegal marijuana grow operations in Isabella and Midland Counties, resulting in hundreds of plants being seized and two arrests. The initial tip-off in early November about a suspected black-market grow operation at a Wise Township residence sparked a police surveillance operation, culminating in a raid on December 17, 2024, during which 257 marijuana plants and firearms were confiscated, FOX 2 Detroit reported.
Investigators also uncovered evidence leading to another illegal operation affiliated with the first, located in Jerome Township, where they seized 76 more plants, 18 pounds of processed marijuana, and additional ammunition, as noted by CBS News Detroit. The operations, allegedly linked to Raul Castenda Hernandez, 36, and Giselle Ibanez Martinez, 42, were sophisticated enough to involve the theft of electricity directly from utility meters, a move that allowed for the masking of actual energy use to avoid detection and payment.
Charges for both suspects include conducting a criminal enterprise and delivery of marijuana, in addition to electricity theft and property destruction, authorities explained. Hernandez, who failed to appear at a subsequent hearing, initially had his bond revoked, while Martinez is awaiting a status conference scheduled for late October, with her bond set at $25,000, Mid-Michigan NOW details.
