Michigan is launching the College Credit for Apprenticeship initiative through the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in partnership with skilled trades unions and the Michigan Community College Association to grant college credit for Registered Apprenticeship programs. The effort supports Gov. Whitmer’s Sixty by 30 goal and is intended to better connect hands-on training with academic pathways, according to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

“Registered Apprenticeships are a powerful way for Michigan workers to earn while they learn, gaining real-world skills and credentials,” officials said, noting that the initiative will help in “opening doors to degrees and certifications that strengthen careers, support employers and continue building a skilled, adaptable workforce across Michigan.” Jeff Donofrio added that “Awarding academic credit for Registered Apprenticeship students makes it more affordable and attainable for them to achieve a college degree or certificate, and ultimately, a well-paying career,” as reported by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

The American Council on Education will conduct third-party evaluations to verify that apprentices receive college credit for on-the-job learning at no cost to unions or community colleges. Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council President Steve Claywell said, “Granting college credit for apprenticeships is a major win for Michigan’s skilled trades. It expands career options and allows our trades workers to continue building skills over the course of their lifetime.” MCCA President Brandy Johnson said the partnerships mean “we’re creating clear pathways for apprentices to further their education, gain additional skills, and advance their careers to build a stronger workforce and support local employers.” More information is available at Michigan.gov/Apprenticeship, as stated by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
