Common Council President José G. Pérez emphasized the importance of knowing what to do in the event of an ICE raid, following a recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article. He highlighted the need for community members to be prepared for unexpected encounters with immigration authorities and to take steps to protect their rights and families, according to a release by the City of Milwaukee Common Council.
Guidance shared by Milwaukee’s advocacy group Voces de la Frontera includes establishing an emergency contact and memorizing important phone numbers, such as those of a lawyer or trusted family member, in case access to a phone is restricted.
Families, especially those with children, are encouraged to develop a safety plan and ensure children know who to contact in an emergency. Teaching children to memorize key phone numbers and understand what to do during a crisis can help maintain communication and safety.
Pérez noted that preparation is essential, particularly for communities affected by immigration enforcement. The information serves as a practical resource for individuals and families seeking to be ready for potential ICE actions.
