Milwaukee County is moving to strengthen funding for public transit through a new proposal led by the County Board’s Finance Committee. According to a press release from Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson and several co-sponsoring Supervisors have introduced a budget amendment and resolution that would allocate nearly $5 million to support transit and paratransit services.
The proposal follows a recent Budget Town Hall where bus riders, operators, and stakeholders voiced concerns about maintaining essential transportation options. Chairwoman Nicholson stated that the Board is taking action based on community feedback to address these needs.
Under the proposal, a framework will be developed to ensure that transit services align with community priorities. A report outlining how the 2026 funds will be distributed is expected to be presented at the County Board’s December meeting.
Key components of the plan include maintaining peak-hour bus operations, working with local employers and schools, reducing fare evasion, and considering limited same-day paratransit options. Any use of contingency funds for restoring or enhancing transit services will require Board approval. This initiative aims to sustain reliable transportation access for Milwaukee County residents while ensuring careful oversight of public funds.
