Milwaukee County is facing financial challenges after President Donald Trump denied Wisconsin’s request for FEMA Public Assistance, despite previous approval of Individual Assistance funds for residents. County Executive David Crowley expressed disappointment over the decision, noting the urgent need for federal support to repair storm- and flood-damaged infrastructure across Eastern Wisconsin.
According to the Milwaukee County Executive’s office release, FEMA has provided more than $123 million in Individual Assistance to Milwaukee County residents affected by the August storms and flooding. However, local governments are now facing $22 million in repair costs for public infrastructure such as roads, parks, and buildings without federal reimbursement.
Damage assessments show significant losses across six Wisconsin counties. While Individual Assistance was approved, Public Assistance—intended for public facility and infrastructure repair—was denied. The State of Wisconsin plans to appeal the decision.
Crowley has urged President Trump to approve Public Assistance funding to help communities rebuild critical infrastructure and recover from the extensive storm damage.
