The indefinitely closure of the McGovern Senior Center has left many Milwaukee residents frustrated and in search of answers. The center, a staple for the local senior community, provided valuable programming and services before its shuttering by Milwaukee County. While the center remains closed, officials have been called upon by concerned citizens to provide a clear plan for its potential reopening.
In response to the outpouring of concern, local residents have been told to keep their voices heard, particularly with regards to the County leaders. As an official statement disclosed, "I want them to know that, although this is a County-controlled site, I will ensure that all options are exhausted to reopen the McGovern Senior Center, including those previously explored and set aside." Despite the efforts, there is currently no definitive timeline for when or if the center will open its doors again.
Alternative locations for senior programming have been offered, including sites such as the Clinton Rose Senior Center and others within the county. Many of the services that were available at the McGovern Senior Center are being provided at these other facilities. However, this is a mere band-aid for residents who had come to rely on the McGovern Senior Center, not just for it's services, but for its role as a communal hub.
County officials are keeping the dialogue open with the public through budget listen and learn sessions, with residents encouraged to attend and articulate their concerns. One such session was already held yesterday, October 21 at the Clinton Rose Senior Center, and another is scheduled for October 28 at the Mitchell Park Pavilion, according to the same statement.
