The Milwaukee culinary community mourns the loss of a local icon, as news of Jim Balistreri's death at age 81 was shared with the public. Balistreri, a name synonymous with Milwaukee's pizza history, was the founder of the acclaimed Balistreri's Italian-American Ristorante and Balistreri's Bluemound Inn. According to a statement on Balistreri's Bluemound Inn's Facebook page, provided by his family and staff, he passed away on Thursday, as reported by CBS58.
Balistreri's journey in the food industry began early, with him working at his uncle's Bella Food Service at the age of 10, as noted by OnMilwaukee. His passion for pizza took shape in the kitchen of Caradaro Club, a pivotal place in Milwaukee's introduction to the Italian staple. Following a stint in the military, he returned to his hometown and in collaboration with Caradaro owner Chuck Mazza, expanded the business with several locations.
The history of Balistreri's establishments extends back to 1971 with the founding of Balistreri's Caradaro Club Restaurant, later transitioning to the moniker by which the community knows it today, Balistreri's Italian-American Ristorante. The legacy of his culinary artistry lived on with the acquisition of one of his favorite spots, the former Otto and Dianne Wenz Bluemound Inn, which he took under his wing in 1996 and rebranded as Balistreri's Bluemound Inn. These establishments proudly served as a gathering place for both families and friends, and they continue to do so today, according to WISN.
Jim Balistreri's impact on the local dining scene was profound, forging more than just eateries, he created a community as stated by his restaurant's group on Facebook. His ethos of dedication, generosity, warm hospitality, and hard work was stitched into the fabric of the restaurant's identity. "His spirit of generosity, warmth and hard work will forever be a part of who we are and what we do," the restaurants' statement read, as per WISN.
