Milwaukee is gearing up to embrace the future with the proposal of its first Innovation District, which was championed through the Common Council's Community and Economic Development Committee. The approval, recommended this past Wednesday, is bringing a novel shape to Walker's Point neighborhood and surrounding areas. This district aims to merge creative force with strategic execution by harmonizing the flow of people and ideas, all in pursuit of sustainable economic growth through entrepreneurship, research, and collaborative synergy that spans both the public and private sectors.
Common Council President José G. Pérez, the mind behind the resolution, envisions this district as just the first step in a larger movement throughout Milwaukee. In an statement obtained by the official City of Milwaukee's announcement, Pérez noted, "All of this makes for a great location to launch Milwaukee’s first innovation district." He's setting his sights not only on flourishing within Walker's Point, but also potentially replicating the model in other parts of the city ripe for innovative evolution.
As part of the effort to kickstart the Innovation District, a public-private leadership framework is being introduced. President Pérez is teaming up with Steve Glynn, Chief Milwaukee Officer of Experience Milwaukee and operator of the Wantable Café, to steer both the inaugural launch and the district's future growth. Their joint endeavor is positioned to cultivate a hub where the city's innovative capacity can both take root and expand.
The resolution is poised for its next hurdle: a full Common Council vote scheduled for October 14. Should it pass, the meeting details confirm a venue at the Common Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., where both in-person attendance and live streaming options will be accessible to the public.
