Montgomery County Recreation, the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee, and the cities of Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Takoma Park have endorsed the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports, developed by the Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative.

According to a Montgomery County press release, leaders from the county and the cities gathered to sign a poster featuring the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports. The rights outlined in the bill include the right to play sports, to a safe and healthy environment, to qualified program leaders, and to be treated with dignity. County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted the importance of providing safe and supportive sports environments for children.

Municipal leaders participated in the endorsement during a special event at the Soccer4Change program, part of Montgomery County Recreation’s efforts to remove barriers for student participation in soccer. City officials issued proclamations declaring a week in October as National Youth Sports Week to mark the occasion.

The initiative is intended to promote safe and inclusive sports programs for youth across the county and participating cities.
