A reported road rage incident on Interstate 696 in Royal Oak, Michigan has prompted an investigation by the Michigan State Police (MSP). Last Saturday evening, a motorist called authorities around 5:20 p.m. to report a white Infiniti SUV driver fired two shots at their vehicle.
While driving in the far-left lane of westbound I-696 near Woodward Avenue, the caller described being threatened by someone in the adjacent center lane. Although the caller's vehicle was not struck and there were no injuries, the freeway was closed for an hour as troopers and a canine unit searched the area, but failed to find any evidence, according to CBS Detroit and as confirmed by both Audacy and FOX 2 Detroit.
In response to the incident, First Lieutenant Mike Shaw with the MSP underscored the gravity of the situation. "There is never a reason to settle a dispute with a firearm," Shaw said, "especially over something as simple as a driving error." He urged those involved in heated on-road altercations to "create some distance" and dial 911, as reported by Audacy.
The Michigan State Police is reaching out to the community for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to come forward with information by calling 855-MICH-TIP or 800-SPEAK-UP. Shaw stressed the importance of community cooperation in maintaining road safety and curtailing dangerous confrontations before they escalate, said First Lt. Mike Shaw. Law enforcement continues to investigate the shooting, as no suspects have been detained at this time.
