Nevada County is gearing up to offer its residents the chance to dispose of their green waste without charge, courtesy of a collaboration that includes the Office of Emergency Services, Nevada County Public Works, and WM (Waste Management). On the dates of October 6 and October 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., locals can bring their yard debris to the McCourtney Road Transfer Station, as outlined in a recent notice, according to the Nevada County.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the cooler fall temperatures to ready their homes and properties against potential wildfires. Ricky Martinez, Defensible Space Supervisor, expressed the need "to stay vigilant on making sure we have good defensible space around our structures and also clear our entry and exit routes in order to quickly evacuate during an emergency," according to a statement obtained by the Nevada County website. The free green waste disposal days are specifically set up to allow citizens to easily remove flammable materials like branches, leaves, and other vegetation, which might otherwise pose a fire hazard close to residential areas.
You can drop off yard waste like branches, leaves, grass clippings, shrubs, and untreated wood, but there are some rules. Each item must be under four feet long and 18 inches wide. Items like poison oak, palm fronds, dirt, rocks, and construction materials are not allowed. For full details, visit ReadyNevadaCounty.org/GreenWaste, as per Nevada County.
