An unsettling confrontation on the Intracoastal Waterway led to the arrest of Christopher Evensen after he was accused of threatening juveniles with a handgun. As reported by WFTV, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department stated that the charges against Evensen include five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon, following the incident that occurred on Saturday.
Witnesses claim Evensen became irate after the wake caused by the juveniles’ boat disrupted his own vessel. This culminated in a supposed exchange where he pointed a handgun at them and issued verbal threats, according to an arrest affidavit cited by WESH. Evensen, who was later seen trailering his boat at the North Causeway Boat Ramp, was found by authorities who had coordinated to locate his vehicle, a white Nissan Frontier, working collaboratively with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
While Evensen has admitted to a verbal exchange with the juveniles, claiming that they were creating a wake and cursing at him, he denies pointing a gun at them, stating instead that he was holding a dark glasses case and car keys at the time of the alleged incident. However, police have mentioned that Evensen appeared to be holding a gun in the video captured by witnesses.
Following the events, Evensen was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he is currently awaiting proceedings, as the seriousness of the hostile encounter with the children on the waterway looms over the forthcoming legal process.
