New York City's esteemed restaurateur, Danny Meyer, is bringing his culinary prowess to Detroit with a new, yet-to-be-named dining establishment at Hudson's Detroit, a modern mixed-use skyscraper set to enhance the city's food scene. Meyer, whose Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) has garnered an impressive collection of awards, including 28 James Beard Awards, founded the group in 1985 and has since opened several acclaimed NYC restaurants such as Gramercy Tavern and The Modern; he also initiated the now-independent Shake Shack, as reported by The Detroit News.
Meyer's entry into the Detroit dining landscape signals an expectation for profound growth and creativity in a city already boasting a thriving culinary community, a sentiment echoed by Meyer himself who, per the Detroit Free Press, expressed his eagerness to join such a dynamic neighborhood, saying, "As a proud native Midwesterner, I couldn't be more excited to plant our flag in Detroit." The Hudson's Detroit location will mark USHG's second U.S. location outside New York, expanding beyond their existing Union Square operation in Tokyo and recent announcements to open additional eateries in Boston.
Senior Vice President of Hospitality for Bedrock Detroit, Andrew Leber, emphasized the import of Meyer's decision to set up shop in Detroit, suggesting that such a move by a world-renowned restaurant group marks a moment of recognition for the city's exceptional dining culture, Leber told Detroit Free Press, "Detroit has the best restaurants and chefs in the country, and the arrival of Union Square Hospitality Group signals that the world has taken notice." The anticipation for what Meyer will bring to the upcoming Hudson's Detroit is met with the city's readiness for the development’s completion, which promises a range of food and beverage options throughout the extensive space.
