More than 18,000 North Carolina drivers have renewed their licenses online since the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles expanded its digital services earlier this month. According to the NCDOT, the new option was made available after Senate Bill 245 was enacted at the end of September.
The increase in online license renewals has reduced the need for in-person visits to the DMV. Previously, drivers who renewed online were required to go in person for their next renewal. Under the new law, eligible drivers, including those with a Real ID and a recent in-person photo on file, can now renew their licenses online for a second consecutive time.
As per the press release, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is planning to expand its online services. Teen drivers with Level 2 licenses will soon be able to upgrade to a full provisional license online. Additionally, state ID cards are expected to become eligible for online renewal by the end of this year.
“We are thrilled to see such strong early adoption of this service, with over 18,000 renewals already processed,” NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine stated in the press release. He explained that the move is not only about convenience for residents but also helps the DMV focus on individuals who are unable to complete their services online.
With these expansions, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles estimates a surge of up to 400,000 additional online transactions annually. Those interested in checking their eligibility for the updated online services can visit NCDOT website for more information.
