The North Carolina coast is breathing a collective sigh of relief after dodging a meteorological bullet this past week. Governor Stein announced the lifting of the State of Emergency following Hurricane Imelda, the storm that managed to spare the Tar Heel state its full fury by staying offshore. The Governor's Office released a statement highlighting the efficacy of the state's preparedness measures, noting, "I am relieved that Hurricane Imelda remained offshore and that a State of Emergency is no longer necessary."
In his statement, obtained by the official Governor's Office, Stein praised the coordinated efforts of local emergency managers, first responders, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NC DOT) for their rapid response to the coastal impacts. Even with Imelda's less-than-expected severity, those on the ground were ready to address, any situations that arose. Stein expressed a heartfelt thanks to the rescue teams and emergency personnel, "I am grateful to our brave North Carolina Search and Rescue Teams, members of the National Guard, and the State Emergency Response Team for staying prepared."
