The directive from the governor stipulates that the U.S. and Ohio flags shall be lowered on all public buildings and grounds within Mahoning County, including landmarks such as the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower. These flags will remain at half-staff until the sun dips below the horizon on the day Trooper Cayton is laid to rest, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Governor.
Governor DeWine's proclamation ensures that Cayton's end of watch is marked with the dignity that his service commands. While the mandate is specific to Mahoning County, the governor’s office has mentioned, other public buildings and grounds across Ohio have the option to follow suit in flying their flags at half-mast.
