As noted by Ohio's Governor Mike DeWine, "Drivers can protect themselves and those nearby by simply wearing a seatbelt and putting away their phones," emphasizing the significance of these actions for overall road safety.
In an interesting paradox, while Ohio records a steady downturn in traffic deaths, a startling 64% of people killed on the state's roads last year were not strapped in, showing a consistency over five years, where this rate has hovered above 60%. Revealing a worrying trend, Ohio's seatbelt adherence sits at 85.2%, shy of the national average. Helping to buck this trend, Governor DeWine, alongside Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel, initiated a safety campaign this past July, underscoring the risk riders pose not just to themselves, but to others when they decline to buckle up.
On the technological front, the Buckeye State has drawn a line in the sand against driving while distracted by phones. A law enacted in 2023 prohibits drivers from using or cradling their cell phones or electronic devices, making it clear that eyes should remain on the road, hands unoccupied. The numbers tell a promising story, since the law's introduction, crashes and fatalities related to distracted driving have seen a steady reduction, as documented by the state's public safety tracks. Just last year, Ohio witnessed a decrease to 8,570 crashes with 27 deaths, improved upon the previous year's 10,280 car crashes and 35 fatalities.
The campaign Buckle Up Phone Down has touched a chord across the nation, garnering more than 56,000 individuals pledging to adhere to safer driving habits in Missouri alone. The scope of this commitment overflows into the business realm, with over 760 companies signing on to endorse the practice.
